The Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Cebu, Philippines, was opened in August 1999 and connects Cebu Island to Mactan Island.
The bridge is one of the widest and longest bridge spans in the Philippines and was named after the late Senator Marcelo Fernan (Oct 24, 1927-July 11, 1999), the 20th President of the Senate of the Philippines, who hailed from Cebu City.
Interestingly enough, Senator Fernan was a close mentor to my Mom. I wish I had gotten to know him when he was still alive for he seems to have left quite the legacy behind in the Philippines.
